11.3 The mid Century’s Bowler
In the mid 1800’s, hats take on a primary role. Men and women are not seen without a hat when in public.
The top hat adopted a vintage touch and was limited to gallant, mundane and official occasions, while the Bowler from England began to progress.
It was a stiff hat that, in a certain way, could consider itself a smaller version of the top hat.
Devised by a London hatter named Bowler, the hat adopted its name and was inaugurated by William Coke in 1850 with a horse ride through the park.
With a round crown and curled brim, it was initially black in colour but later developed in shades of grey and brown.
